Considering new submersible well for irrigation

I am considering installing a well myself. I have never done this before but have a friend which has installed a few on his own. Is it possible to install a well in my yard and put a submersible pump in to the 4" pipe which I would install? Is there any links out there which explains how the do-it-yourselfer could follow which explains how to do this work? Thanks in advance.
