I have a home in upstate NY. The washing machine is in the basement. The drain pipe is about 5' off the floor connected to the main drain(3' off floor) in the basement going to a septic tank. The drain line has a trap but the vent is open to the basement and not vented outside. Is this ok? Do I need to have it vented through the roof (is that even possible now) or is there another solution.

Go to L***S or a plumbing supply house and buy an air admitance valve.

Install the valve on the vent.

What kind of pipe is it? Copper, plastic, galvanized?

Depending on the size of the vent pipe you will need a 1.5" female adaptor to glue on the vent pipe the put some teflon tape on the threads of the AAV and thread it on.

The AAV comes with a 2" X 1.5" female adaptor in case the vent pipe is 2".

The AAV will let air into the plumbing system when needed but won't let sewer gas into the house.

Is the pipe white or black?

You need to get PVC as opposed to ABS and glue to make it work.
