Absolutely #3 is the proper design ... you would be able to quickly tell if you could connect a washer and drain it into each one of these 3 designs. It would be very obvious very quickly

You are right about the "proper" LOL ... I used to go out to clients years ago who lived in older houses that would buy new washing machines - their existing drain lines could not handle the increased drain rate of the new machine - even though their drain lines would be perfectly clear ... either the drain piping was too small or had too many bends ...
