Copper pipe

I was at lunch today with a group of people and a guy said that he replace his copper water pipes in his house with plastic pipe . I ask why and his answer was green stuff on the copper pipe was eating holes in the copper ,I ask why not just replace the leaking section , said it wouldn't help. I have never heard of this. Has anyone ? And of course the plumping company took the old copper pipe . Just curious here seems I always want to know why thanks George

Some water doesn't mix well with copper. In the Seattle area, copper lasts a long time. In parts of California, not so long.

Also, some of the old flux, which was acid can accumulate at fittings.

The "green stuff" is a patina which "protects" the copper. It is NOT what eats holes in the pipe, although the outside of the copper WILL develop a "green spot" AFTER it starts leaking. The only repiping I have ever done was remove steel pipes, (which had NO value), and install copper.
