Hey guys, I've got a great little plumbing shortcut you can use to add a vent to a toilet drain. I learned about it this afternoon when I removed my home's original toilet in bathroom #2. All you do is take an elbow fitting, cut a hole in it, insert a piece of pipe, and then caulk the hell out of it! Easy!

You can see how the (former) plumber did it here!

Now somebody get me the jackhammer! (Damnit I hate home ownership!)

Are you quite sure that is a vent connection? After all, even the most rudimentary knowledge of
venting is a big step above the level of many would-be "plumbers".

I am suprised they did not come here before doing it and ask if it was okay to do it that way, and then go ahead after we told them it would not be a good idea.

looks like a turd peeler:p

It may have been put in by the same guys who made a "wildcat" sewer tap into the city main. Rather than call the city to put it in, and pay the fees, they drilled a hole in the side of the PVC main, and stuck their pipe into it. The problem was it stuck 4" into the pipe and caused a stoppage.

though by no means a common occurance, still with the advent of materials that are inexpensive and easy to work with, hack alterations like that are much easier to accomplish. Pex, shark bites and the like allow anyone with a hair brained idea to cut into their plumbing system and make potentially dangerous cross connections and create back flow situations that could put many folks health and safety at risk.
