A couple of years ago I took the boards advise and bought a Toto. I love it! It works great!
But the seat is oval and not very comfortable.

My wife says I paid too much for the Toto (about $425). Drake, I believe. She wants to look at the big box stores for a traditional round bowl toilet.

I looked at Terry's toilet ratings and it appears they have not changed in the past couple of years.

Can anyone recommend one of the big box toilets that will work as good as the Toto?

Thanks!

It's the seat. Any seat from any manufacture will work on the bowl.
Just go down to the hardware store and pick out one she likes.

There are two shapes, round and elongated.
Keep in mind that some women perch at the edge of the seat, and then complain that it's narrow.
Check to make sure she is sitting at the back of the seat first, when it's nice and wide.

Toto also makes more than one version of the seat...some are flatter.

One of the issues people tend to have with many of the big-box stores is that the manufacturers often omit some of the QA/QC to keep the price down. So, if you happen to get a good one, you're fine, but you may have to go through more than one to get that to happen. Many people, not knowing the 'whole' story, base their buying decision only on the MAP scores. How many people flush nice, smooth, plastic wrapped sausages? In the real world, what works well on the MAP test is not a perfect indicator of what you'll see in your house. ANything over 500 is fine. Personally, I'd much prefer an elongated toilet. OFten, they aren't any (or much) longer than a round one, and are much more male friendly. If you look at how often you change a toilet - 20-years or more is often the point when remodeling pushes the fact, over that time, a few bucks is nothing for something that works right the first time.

Depending on the style and options, Toto is competitive. Avoid any of the all-in-one box toilets - builder grade toilets often barely work and any water saving you may think you'll get go down the drain when you need to flush multiple times. If you spend a little time with the search function, you'll get hundreds of things to read where people have asked the same question...

Are the various Toto elongated seats different shapes, or is the lid the only thing that is different? We purchased another seat from the big box store. The most expensive on they had. It sets better, but the quality is not the same as a Toto.

The round or elongated shapes are the same, but the contour of the portion you sit on differs on some, with some being flatter, and others more sculpted. You have to read the fine print. Terry has explained it before, but I don't remember the details.
