Connecting trap to galvanized nipples

can u use a pvc trap and slip nut just like u would a brass tubular when connecting to a galvanized nipple?

over the years i always find the gal rots where connecting to the brass

If the nipple is in good shape, yes. Screw a female adapter on and go from there.

Not all that looks like brass is solid brass! A solid brass piece should last when connected to galvanized, but a plated piece would quickly start to corrode. Also, keep in mind that the threaded portion of the galvanized doesn't likely have any galvanized metal on it, or if it did, it was damaged. So, bare steel will corrode more easily.

The way you ask it, NO! You screw a Marvel connector/trap adapter/DeSanko, (whatever they call it in your area), onto the pipe and then use ITS slip nut and washer to secure the trap. You do NOT install the slip nut directly onto the pipe.

hj-Are there trap adaptors with female threads? I've always had to glue 'em up.

thanx hj, one of the nipples is 2" what is the best way to bring down to 1.5 inch? just a reducer coupling with a 1.5 nipple then the desanko? also can the desanko be used to transition to a PVC trap or just brass or both?

If you have the room yes a reducing coupling is going to be the easiest thing to find.

with the 2" nipple you could not connect the trap directly to it anyway. Yes, there are brass trap adapters with male or female threads. A 2 x 1 1/2 reducing coupling and a male trap adapter will give you the shortest connection. And the brass adapters are for use with ANY trap material, although you would normally replace the brass ring with a nylon slip joint washer.
