How often and what method should be used to make sure the water heater drain pan line does not get plugged up?

Dump a pan of hot water into the drain pan, but what would plug it up in the first place?

I think he/she is talking about the drain valve on the water heater.

The question was about keeping the "drain pan line from plugging" not the tank drain.
