Living in the dry climate of colorado, I've been wanting to install a whole house humidifier. My brother has one and loves the way it makes the house feel but with his the water is constantly trickling through the humidifier even when the furnace is not running wasting tons of water. I bought a used humidifier off craigslist and have been trying to think of ways it solve this problem. Can I get some sort of electronic valve that will turn the water on only when the furnace is running?

Mine came as a system. There should be a solenoid valve wired to a control box. On my system that box has an out side air temp sensor and a couple of sensors in the ducting to monitor humidity. The whole system only gets power when the blower runs. That can be changed do only when the burners are fired. The next model up is made to have NO waist water. It is intended for people with wells I think. It was a couple hundred more I think.

Do not use a saddle valve Plum in a proper shut off and a needle valve to manage flow.

The humidifier SHOULD have an electric valve and a humdistat so that it only operates WHEN humidity is needed, not ALWAYS, nor ALWAYS when the furnace is operating. Just WHEN it is needed.
