I had to watch this several times to see how this vet did that.
As he approached, the gunman had one opportunity to fire and he didn't.
Usually the psych effect of a shotgun prevents this kind of stunt and possibly the gunman was counting on that. He must have been overconfident. The others had their hands raised, so maybe this caused him to relax his guard.
And the vet was pretty quick thinking, if he was thinking at all. So, one combat vet is equal to or better than a very well armed, inexperienced robber, sometimes.
It's like a Steven Seagal movie.
