my toilet needs to be 1/2" to 3/4" farther away from the wall because of remodeling. The flange is 12" on center from the wall. Do i need to use an offset flange or can i get away with reinstalling the toilet off center on the flange. It will probably be a 1/2" off. I'm concerned with leaking of course.

If it is truely 12" from the FINISHED wall, then it is perfect for a normal toilet. Many toilets will fit if they are slightly less than 12".

I also think you're going to be OK, but in answer to the question about setting it off center on the flange, that's, NO. The toilet has a horn that the wax ring fits over and then drops into the flange, so there's no way to fudge on that part. But again, you will be just fine if you have 12" from the finished wall or even slightly less.
