I wanted to do some low voltage path/flood lights outside my house and wanted some advice on good brands or online sources for good metal lights. I don't want really expensive ones but a step above Malibu/Big Box store kits.
Thanks

If you don't use all the incand. lights in the string the voltage to the remaining ones will be higher and so your lamps will burn out faster. The installation instructions are silent on this issue.

I use a power resistor from an old TV set to reduce the voltage by 10% or so.
10 ea. 4w lamps at 12v would need a ~0.3 Ω 6w resistor. You still get plenty of brightness.

Malibu is out of business, so they are not an option. The lights are wired in parallel, so the voltage is CONSTANT regardless of how many, or how few, you use, as long as you do not exceed the total amperage/wattage for the transformer.

Volt lightning is top of the line and expensive but they'll last forever. Mostly made of brass and powder coated. Super quality and most of them have LEDS now. Middle of the line is Super Bright Leds.

Since Malibu is OFB (http://www.kccllc.net/malibu), you'll not find a set for $20-$50 anymore. I bought about three malibu sets in a ten year period. I pulled them all out and put them in the trash. Low quality, corrosion, plastic parts breaking, fire ants loved to nest in them for the warmth of the light bulb and then the replacement bulbs got expensive.
