Anode length matter on water heater

I have a 75 gallon Rheem gas hot water heater that I had to replace the anode on. I purchased a magnesium anode which I think was 36". The original anode is 44". Will using the shorter anode has any negative effect?

Won't last as long...unless it is thicker...less material. That's why they call it a sacrificial anode...it erodes rather than the tank.
