We just moved into our new house. we've always had city water and now we have a well. This morning when we went to turn on the water, all that came out was spitting air. My husband hit the reset button out in the pump house, Then RED sludge began spitting from the spickets. within a few minutes the same thing happened again, and he has 2 continuisly run out side and push the reset. Any thoughts, please??????

There are too many possibilities for us to just guess at the problem.

What kind of pump? What kind of well?

Is the pump above ground (a jet pump of some kind) or in the well (a submersible pump)?

If the pump is above ground is there just one pipe on the inlet side of the pump and one on the outlet (shallow well jet), or two on the inlet and one on the outlet (deep well jet)?

What model number of pump? The number on the motor is usually just the motor number; the pump number is usually on the pump part.

Where is the pressure switch located and is there any kind of control box other than the pressure switch?

Is the reset button on some kind of control box, or on the motor of the pump. Please describe the control box including any model number and maker of the box.

Is the well seen as a pipe coming out of the ground, or is it a large crock or pit with a cover? If it has a cover that you can remove and look into, how far down is the water? Measure the distance down to water if possible.

Having to push the reset button says there is a serious problem, so the more you do that, the quicker the problem will get worse and burn something up and that is not a good thing (read expensive and more time consuming to fix the cause of the problem).

You probably should call a pump guy or well driller.

And turn the power off to the pump.
