This morning our pump cycled on and ran and ran. I went for about a 1/2 hour until I just unplugged it because I was afraid it would burn out. It usually only goes on for five minutes at the most.
The pressure wasn't building enough to kick it off and of course I had no water pressure after I unplugged it.

It is a Gould submersible 3/4 hp that was installed in 1982 (?) Well is about 150' deep. Haven't had any noticable debris or unusual smells even though it has been a dry year, although I think the year we moved in was drier and we had no problems. Am I correcting in guessing that a 23 year old pump is more than ready to be replaced?

Yes 23 years old is about time for retirement but, maybe it's something else. Like a bad spot in the cable, a hole or leak in the drop pipe etc.. So you need a pump guy, well driller, or a plumber that is capable of pulling the pump, to check the electrical system to the pump and the pump motor windngs etc..
