Removing stubborn stains from Toto CEFIONTECT

My Toto Vespin with CEFIONTECT finish has some stubborn stains under the rim and part of the way down the sides of the bowl. I have tried using the usual bowl stain removers, like Lysol Cling, and have scrubbed with a good toilet brush, but I have been unable to remove the stains. We have extremely hard water here in southern California, so that may be contributing to the problem. I know that I cannot use an abrasive on the CEFIONTECT finish. Does anyone have any guidance for me on what steps I ought to try next to remove these difficult stains?

muratic acid

go get a glallon of muratic acid.... about $3. 50

try to get all or most of water out of the bowl

pour the gallon of muratic acid into the bowl

cover the bowl with a garbage bag so that the fumes

dont mist up into the room....seal it up good or you will stink up

your house with a fairly nasty smell ...

The acid is not dangerous, you could put your hand in it and it
wont really start to bite you for quite a while...it washes off with water.
Brick men use it in a diluted form to wash off lime from brick walls.

but I advise not to breath the fumes or it will
make you gag.

turn the fan on in the room, and open the window to
the bathroom if it has one....

let the stuff do its thing for as long as you can 1+ hours

it wont hurt the porceline and will clean it to like the day

it was installed.....

flush the toilet five times to dillute the acid going

down the drain..

this is not too hard, I tell little old ladies how to do this
all the time...

it does smell pretty bad so be sure to seal it up good
the bowl lid real good...

Many thanks for your excellent suggestion. Are you confident that muratic acid will not harm the CEFIONTECT finish? I know that CEFIONTECT can be damaged by abrasive cleansers, but I have heard nothing one or the other about the effect of acids.

its your risk

cant really say for sure, about the TOTO

I do know it hasnt hurt anyones toilet I
have recommended it to over the years...and thats probably
a hundred + times..

I did to my own Almond American Standard toilet a few years
ago without any adverse affects...
and was very pleased witht he results

it is china and they all have a gloss to them.

a toilet is a toilet, china is china..they all go through a kiln
their is very little difference between them all

so you can take it from there, but if it is already totally stained
and discolored , you really dont have much to lose anyway, right??

Why not contact Toto to get their reccomendations? Their contact info is on Terry's toilet report page.

The SanaGLos finish (glaze) on some of the Toto toilets (and sinks) is a glaze, but has some non-standard properties: it is much smoother than the typical glaze (which means many things just can't attach themselves to it), and it has a built-in electrical ion barrier that makes it harder for bacteria to do their thing. I'd definately want to check with the manufacturer to understand how to clean those stains off of it without damaging the finish. It's tough, but it is not a typical glaze. ANything that roughed it up would relegate it to a 'normal' finish, and would defeat some of its advantages.

Toto tech support had some suggestions

I spoke with Toto tech support (888-295-8134). The rep recommended trying regular Clorox bleach and, if that did not do the trick, CLR. He emphasized that the CEFIONTECT finish is actually very durable. It is important, though, to avoid using abrasive powders (like Comet or Ajax) or heavy-duty acids (like muriatic acid) because they will pit the finish and make it impossible to keep clean.

Thanks to everyone for the responses to my inquiry.

I know this is an old post. However, mevans42 post recommends Clorox bleach per Toto. But the link to the Toto PDF document in his same post states NOT to use bleach. That PDF might be for a different type of finish (CEFIONTECH which might be something different than Sanigloss) but the post is misleading.
