point well?

Has anyone ever heard of digging a large hole say 6' diameter and around 15' deep back filling it with pea gravel about half way and then placing a point well set up in the pea gravel and then back fill with dirt so it creates kind of water holding area?

Nope, never heard of that one. I used to pound in 1-1/4" wells when I was a kid. We started at ground level though. Most of them went less than 30 feet, however some actually went deeper. I finally got smarter and bought a couple of drill rigs.
