I am going to replace my current 18x24" sump crock with a 30x36" crock. My current crock is actully set higher in the floor than in should have been, and my pump short cycles alot, especially with heavy rains. I would like some opinions on whether its better to keep my current 1/2 hp Zoeller M98 (with seperate vertical master switch) or to go with a 1/3 hp pump. Supposedly with the 1/3 hp pump, the pump will pump longer each tme and cycle less than with the 1/2 hp which empties the crock quicker. Hopefully the wider crock will also enable more volume also?

I probably will run my current pump til it dies, any ideas on the bigger crock giving me more volume? Do I need to go deeper than 24" or will just going wider help me more? I am also considering going with a "duplex" setup with 2 pumps.

Wider (larger diameter) will help more than deeper.

A duplex system is usually used to handle failures or the occasional increase in demand. They should be alternated using an alternating duplex control so that both get used. An unused backup pump can fail from sitting in the water unused and may not be available when needed.

You can get fairly inexpensive alternating relays that will allow you go "roll your own" alternating duplex control. They are often quite expensive as a commercial package.
