I am getting ready to replace an old cast iron bathtub with a new cast iron or acrylic tub. Is it possible to put in a slightly wider tub (1 or 2 inches)? I expect that the drain hole will not be aligned properly with the drain. What is involved for a professional plumber to solve this problem?

The only thing involved with a plumber is to hire him and then let him do his work. He does not need any advice from you, so you really do not have to worry about how the drain is going to fit, or anything else.

Any plumber will have no problem with the drain.
Really the only worry about a tub 2" wider would be how it fits the room.
Toilets are supposed to be 15" from the center to the tub.
A larger tub will decrease this space.
