Identifying a Cast Iron Tub

I've read a lot about breaking up a cast iron tub to remove it. How do you identify a cast iron tub? The wall thickness at the overflow and drain holes is about 1/4 inch. Is this cast iron?

the best way is to just tap on it ,
you can pretty much tell a cheap piece
of steel from a cast iorn one that way....

I would like to hear how they claim is the
best way to break one up???

Usually you want ot take all mirrors and
hanging things off the near by walls.

then you take a large piece of carpet and lay it
in the tub ...for protection.

then you take the sledje hammer and whack the hell
out of the tub through the carpet...

breaking iti into managable pieces....

what is the proper way to do this??

Thanks for your input. I was going to use a heavy canvass tarp to prevent projectiles. Also my heavy canvass hunting coveralls, safety glasses, face shield, ear plugs and gloves. I read two schools of thought on starting points. One says start at the top cewnter of the front. The other says start at the overflow and drain holes. The latter makes more sense to me.

I have also used large hunks of cardboard
if no heavy carpet is available ... You will most
likely ruin that tarp.

I think the best place to whack it is along the apron first....

break the apron at both ends then break it along through the
mid section....

then break the center and work outwards.towards the walls


you will have lots of porceline glass shards to contend with...

its nothing too dangerous, I have done this in cut off shorts
and a tee shirt before with only minimal blood loss.
