Our house is 25 yrs old and water supply comes from a drilled well. Water enters house and 3/4 " supply line is approx 3 feet to softener and the balance of house is 1/2 " copper pipe. Hot water heater is 30 ft from softener and lines serve the rest, another 40-50 ft, of the house (3 bathrooms, kitchen and laundry). What diameter lines should be used from softener to hot water tank and then on to balance of the outlets?

Good plumbing practice would indicate that all the lines, except for the final ones to the last fixture or two, should be 3/4" pipe or copper tubing. If the piping is plastic then you might want to increase the size even further.

A 3/4" main for a 3 bath house is undersized by at least half--should be at least 1", maybe more depending on distance and pressure. And the softener restricts things down a bit more...
Run 3/4" all the way, with 1/2" branches to the fixtures. Run no more than 2 fixtures on 1/2" (and don't have these 2 be a tub/shower and a toilet).

Sizing the water lines will depend on four factors.

1. Pressure at street meter.
2. Distance from meter to highest fixture in house
3. Elevation of ground from meter to house.
4. Number of fixture units you have in the house.

Once this has been determined then size of main and runs is found on your code books flow chart.

Without these four known factors you can only guess, if you have to guess then go with what Deb said 1" at least till you get past the feed to the water heater.

Then again this will also depend on the layout on the house. and how you run the lines.
