Critters are ripping up my back yard

Something is coming into my backyard at night and ripping up all of the Baby Tears. I think it is a possum so I set my lights to stay on all night. Since then, I am not seeing anymore damage. Since I have two small dogs, I am concerned that it could be something else (possibly an animal that carries rabies). I'm not sure I solved the problem. Does anyone else have any idea what could be doing this damage?

Seems almost anything carries rabies. You need to beg/borrow/rent a motion-sensor-triggered flash camera and set it out there some night. Assuming the yard ripper isn't a camera thief, you should have some nice shots of something in the morning.

What does the rippage look like? We have skunks that come at night, to dig and eat the lawn grubs. They dig holes about 1-2" in diameter and about an inch or so deep.

someone just rolled back a section of baby tears. If you aren't familiar with these plants, they are low to the ground and spread like grass carpeting everything. Whatever animal is doing this is taking sections as big as 6" and rolling it back and leaving it. We have had this for awhile, and it is usually just a small section and we just put it back, step it down and everything is fine. Last Wednesday, the critter tore up most of the yard. On Thursday we fixed it as best we could and on Friday it was all torn up again. Saturday, I reset the lights and did whatever repairs I could. Since then the yard has been untouched (knock on wood).

Is there a slight waft of eau du skunk in the air? That would point towards the smelly creature. After they pay me a visit to eat my grubs, there is a faint aftersmell that is unmistakeably skunk.

If no smell then it may be possums, or what about coons? Are you in a city/subdivision setting, or in the country? Just thinking about the possibility of coyotes, but that would not likely be the case in a more developed environment.
