Tips and Information from a SoCal Exterminator:
I was told we have varieties of Harvester ants here. Which says are pretty easy to kill because they groom one another and poison transfer occurs easily. These ants will not enter homes.
He Recommends AMDRO found at big box/hardware. (says fire ants on label)
http://www.amdro.com/
Careful with AMDRO around pets BTW.
Dumping a gallon of poison on mounds will not solve an ant problem. Nests can be 6 foot long-down underground.
He suggested I bait them and they should pick it up--back to the nest.
IE erect a small brick structure with bait inside--to keep pets out and prevent it from blowing away.
