Brass Shower Drain rubber seal ?

In the attached photo you will see where the screw-in ring has forced the rubber seal inwards. Is this the way it should look? There was a beveled end to the rubber seal which I placed downwards as it seemed to match the shape of the brass housing (there were no directions as to which way it should go).

Any comments?

Paul

I believe that the screw-in ring has a taper to it that will match the taper on the rubber sleeve.

I've been putting the taper "up".

I run the pipe a little higher too.
