I'm looking for every trick in the book (and then some) for minimizing toilet noise from upper floor, transmitted to main level living area. This is a new installation. I am worried about the noise of toilet flushing, toilet filling, and use of toilet. Has anyone heard of special gasketing that isolates toilet fromthe floor? What is the best material for waste pipe? Any other tricks? Special pipe hangers? any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

In terms of the waste piping, cast iron is always considered to be the quietest. I believe it would be important for the drop AND the elblow and horizontal run to the stack. I believe a good installation, including insulation, may be as important as the pipes.

Be Quiet Mr. Toilet

I certainly agree with Jimbo's comment about cast iron piping transmitting less noise. However, your structure is already built. Replacing your current toilet with one that produces less noise may help those in your living room from hearing the toilet flush.
I've not heard of any special gasketing to isolate the toilet from the floor. Piping that touches framing members does transmit sound. Hangars alone will not prevent the contact.
The first harm in your case is the architectural plans that specified the design and material for your home. It is expensive to correct the design/material causes after installation and most attempt covering as a more reasonable alternative to correcting.

Two ways to reduce noise.............either cast iron or copper for your vertical drain, ABS is noisey, you can hear the water running down it. Also make sure that nothing in your piping is touching any framing member in the house.
