I just took apart a gerber shower handle to replace the stopper (shower head was leaking hot water). Upon taking it apart, I noticed a thick rubber washer in front of the main brass piece that screws in. This washer sits between the main piece and the brass piece that screws into that. I'm sorry I don't know the proper names. The washer looked chewed up and uneven (it has strings in it). I put it all back together and everything works. Can someone tell me the function of that washer? I just want to know if I should replace it or not. Thanks

Looks like this:

The seat washer is on the end of the stem. The other washer is the packing or the packing washer. It can be a graphite string or sometimes it is a rubber washer. It keeps water from leaking around the stem. Sometimes you can just tighten the packing nut and it squeezes against the packing washer to stop a leak around the faucet stem.

Thanks. I tightened it and didn't see anything leaking when I tested it. So I assume I can leave it alone? I was helping a friend of a friend, so there's no way for me to check up on it, but it was definitely dry when I tested it.

Thanks
