I have 3 1983 kohler toilets that all have the kohler flapper valves that have the large dome or bubble on the end that seals the water flow to the bowl. Im no expert but all the other brands seem to have just just have a flat interchangeable rubber flapper, buy anywhere, not brand specific.

was kohler having a brain seizure ?? or is kohler big on "kohler only" design?

Kohler is the king of NIH (not invented here) thinking...if it isn't invented 'here' they don't want it. As a result, take a look at their parts book...it's the size of a big phone book and few places can afford to stock the numerous bits.

You don't need to graduate from Wharton MBA school to know the answer: to make more money.

Just look at their prices.

I have 2 1988 Kohler Wellworths. One has a Fluidmaster Bullseye flapper and one with a generic from Ace. Both work fine, but I like the design of the Fluidmaster better ( + I like the floating chain!).
Just get what's available, adjust it properly, and you should be good to go.
Cheers,
JIM

And I like to REMOVE those. Kohler does NOT make their flappers. Most of them are from Korky. They are "unique" in that they are different to match the various flush valves, but they are NOT only available from Kohler.
