I need the nipples to connect the body spray jets in my shower to the 1/2" FIP elbows I have roughed in the wall. The BSJs accept a 1/2" male IPS nipple, and look to have no taper. Will a regular MIP nipple work, or will it crack/split the female inlet of the BSJs because of the taper? Do MIP x IPS nipples exist?

MIP and IPS are the same thing/size, just as FIP is the female version. Unless the body spray has it own "nipple" with a flange and a gasket, you MUST use a tapered thread.

Thanks for the clarification, hj. I was concerned because the inlet wall of the BSJs are thin, dead straight, and have a gasket to bottom out/seal. All the IPS references I found related to toilet supply connections, and I was afraid this was a similar connection, in 1/2". I'll still be cautious tightening them on.

If they have a gasket at the bottom, which would be a bad design because it limits where the head winds up when it is tight, the the thread is loose enough for the nipple to screw all the way in.
