homeowner here, the valve was replaced about 8 years ago, shower upstairs is not used much.
Has started to leak out of the diverter "pull for shower on" knob. leaks when you are not pulling on the knob.

Is that what the 2 o rings are supposed to do? stop leakage down the stem? one o ring is at the left end and is not installed on the rod in the picture and to me looks to big, I can go to the hardware store for another one ?

or does stem leakage have something to do with the beveled cone washer? or the pressure of the spring? Thanks.

Thanks!!! not many diagrams on how these work, takes someones memory- Appreciate it! What do young plumbers do? this is a 1989 faucet.
I bought a repair kit for the push pull diveretr valve from my ace hardware- they have great stock, they are not the potted plants and water hose type hardware store. I think they sold parts to Columbus when he came ashore.

And starting on the bevelled washer end (lower part of the picture ), and moving left in the picture along the rod, , the parts build up is
1. small brass washer
2. spring
3. another brass washer just like no. 1 washer
4. a larger 0 ring that seats /pushes around and is stopped by/held by
5. the o ring sitting in the groove,
my question is why does the kit ALSO have a small metal "e clip" in it , that I think might go on the right side of the o ring thats in the rod groove and maybe stop the springs end there , - but no instructions in the repair kit, AND the full assembly in a bag at the store for a complete shower diverer assembly (not a kit) did not have this e clip installed anywhere on it.

gee, extra parts bother me --said the aircraft mechanic.

I installed it without the e clip, it seems to work fine????????????
