I know I probably need to chlorinate the well - would be the first time
getting water tested at an independent lab tomorrow.
anything I should need to know before I attempt this.

btw - read lots of threads on chlorination so I think I have the correct procedures down

Have you seen alot of this in the field?
what could be causing this?
should add that it is mostly in the cold lines only

here are pics:

Did I see that one but not the other is discolored? Is that the hot line turning green?

If so, could be you have an algae bloom in your hot water tank. What temp do you run it at?

Does it stink?

Yep, mainly on the cold side lines
flushed the w/h last week with 1 gal of vinegar - let sit for 6 hours then flushed (not into septic)
anode rod was cut off when the h2o softner was installed 7 yrs ago - bought a new one - will install
hwh temp - not sure but i bumped it up after the last flush - it's an A.O smith with the electronic controls with the diff colored light scale
doesn't smell any stronger/weaker than it did when I moved in
but have noticed that I am getting rust colors around the drains - never had before

Shock chlorinating is good. http://www.water-research.net/shockwelldisinfection.htm has useful info including 4 inch casing has 0.65 gallons per foot of water. Do it before serious winter, if there is time. It is going to get cold tomorrow. Get some chlorine bleach, and depending on the well and how much water you are able to feed back in to the top of the well, it may take a long time for the bleach to circulate. Check your messages.

The rust is probably coming from inside the tank, since you don't have a proper anode. It may be too late to put one in now.

If there's more algae in the cold lines, though, that does suggest the bloom is in your well.

Winters here - got 5" of snow already
high of 9 low of -11 tomorrow
may have to wait till a warm spell
as I suspected the growth is from the well - darkest line is the feed line directly from the well
now have to find the cause

Personally, I would avoid using hypochlorite (bleach), you will develop disinfection by-products (some regulated, others not); this is common in disinfected potable waters.
Try KPMS instead, it's a selective oxidant, with the final reduction product being sulfate.
