Last night I installed some Strata Mat at my friends place in Coquitlam. Here is a peak at the new uncoupling membrane from Laticrete and a few Pros and Cons I observed last night.
On the Pro Side:
Checking the coverage is awesome. The clear surface so easy to tell when you get proper bond to the back side of the mat. This clear colour also making it easy to see the water closet flange to make a quick easy cutout around the toilet's rough in spot. I also like that the grid pattern is on one inch center's. This really helped with measuring my cuts - I wonder why they don't advertise this as a feature.
Once set and checked I skimmed out the floor.
On the Con Side:
There where a bunch of little confetti type plastic bits everywhere on the floor where I brought in the Strata Mat and placed it down. I'll give the next roll a good bang and shake to remove some of these little plastic bits. Not really a huge pain but one more thing to clean up on a job site is never a good thing. I also worry about these getting picked up into a grout application so be careful to vaccum these installs well before setting or grouting tile.
I also found the Strata Mat a little harder to infill the waffles over Ditra. Not much but a hair harder.
On the Pro Side:
I found Strata Mat sat down better into the thin-set than Ditra when smoothing - I think air is allowed out quicker because of the Strata Mat vapour holes. I really like this and there was much less chasing of air pockets. Side by side I would say Even Steven on an install side. The One inch Layout is nice. The fact that the mat has a circle and a square allowed me to count by two's with my fingers. I really like this one simple point the most.
