I recently bought a great house (haven't even moved in) with a "let's call it a 3 bathroom" bathroom. While the functional toilet technically fits, it's in at a very tight and strange angle (pic) and very close to the wall in front of it (pic), maybe 9 inches from floor pipe front to wall. I have to sit at an angle on the angled toilet, at 5'7" I'm too tall to point my knees toward the front wall. What are my options, if any? Any new toilet is preferable to moving a wall or pipes. I'm discovering that corner tanks and tankless toilets exist, but that's as far as I am so far. I don't know what I don't know, so I'm not even sure I can offer more information at this point to help you help me. I need to keep moving walls and rerouting floor pipes off the table due to budget constraints.

You may need to move the sink or get a different sink to get room if you go to a corner toilet. Measure from back wall to bolts on toilet base, and from side wall to toilet center. Typically corner (triangle) toilets expect both dimensions to be 12 inches. Can you make up a floor plan with dimensions for walls and sink?

In the mean time, work around it by sitting pointing 15 degrees to the right.

We're looking at replacing the sink, but that part seems pretty strait forward. The current one crowds the small space even further. I can't measure exactly for a few weeks. We live currently 5 hours from the new house and it will be a couple of weeks before we can get to it again. Will I need to take the existing toilet off the floor to measure to the center of the drain to choose a new toilet?

In the mean time, we're reserving the space for our 5 year old and using bathrooms 1 and 2.

FWIW, and I think this requirement has been around for quite awhile, to pass code, a toilet needs 15" from the centerline to any obstruction (i.e., at least a 30" width). It doesn't look like that is the situation there. There may be a code for minimum room in front of toilet, but I'm not sure...there is one for 24" space in front of a sink, though, so you can walk buy it.

No. Two separate measurements from the walls (not baseboard).
1. measure from wall behind toilet to center of the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor.
2. Measure the distance from the side wall to the center of the toilet. A framing square may help with your measurements.

If you have trouble measuring to the center, measure to the far side. Measure to the near side. Take the average.

I'm sorry, I don't know what "FWIW" means.

For what it's worth, those are 3 inch tiles, so I'll estimate the space to be about 26-28 inches deep and about 36 inches wide. Sorry I can't add exact measurements right now.

Are older homes not grandfathered in for codes? We think the bathroom was an update, not a complete add and the home is from the 1930's.

It appears that the Titan Triangle by American Standard is on the way out (i.e. discontinued), but some are still available out there.

American Standard's web site does show a Cadet 3 Triangle in both elongated and round bowl. And a Cadet Pro also in elongated and round. Both are currently in production.

It's a 1.6gpf toilet so it isn't going to be approved in California and perhaps Texas.

It does have a 3" flush valve and 2-1/8" trapway, but it's from AS so there is no telling what the quality of the build and the design of the trapway are going to be like -- i.e. how well it will flush and whether it will have defects in casting.

hey are in Oklahoma so it doesn't matter whether TX or CA would approve it or not. A "triangle toilet would require that the sink be moved elsewhere. It could not stay next to the toilet. It has nothing to do with "grandfathering" it, because it was NEVER an approved installation.

Uh...yeah. I know that. However, these threads are read hundreds if not thousands of times by people who find their way here by doing a Google search and use them for information without asking additional questions. Accordingly, I wanted that info to be in the post. {biting tongue}
