Does anyone recommend using an upflow valve in replace of a mechanical backwash valve for a GAC filter?

It has become a common practice to upflow GAC systems in order to save money, but it also comes with a host of problems. This question can be considered "loaded" since any answer can be argued either way and many companies will fight for their way.

For the most part, downflow GAC systems work better. Upflow is simpler and it has a lot of potential problems. I will leave it at that for now.

What are the potential problems?

What is a decent control valve for a GAC system? A Clack, which I have on my WS, seems a bit overkill for a GAC...
