Hello,
I have a Heil 3 ton central ac unit. It was installed when my house was built (2006).
The compressor took a crap. I had a guy come look at my system and said the compressor needs replaced.
Anyway, before determining it was the compressor,he installed a hard start kit.
He can install a new compressor, and fill Freon. He says its about $30 a pound.
Everything for $1200.00 total.
Does this sound right? Am I getting a good deal?

Thanks for your opinion.

I do not think it is a good deal. If there is a burn-out, then part of tubing with black stuff inside must be replaced, cleaner/neutralizer must be added to Freon, new filter drier installed on gas line, after a day of operation this filter has to be replaced and acid test for Freon must be performed, of there will be no acidity, then system is fine, if there is still acidity in Freon, then cleaning must continue. If just slap new compressor in the place, and not take care of cleaning of the system, then new compressor burn-out will happen again within a year. so 1200 for everything? you are the judge.

I am sure that the install would include flushing the system or the new compressor will not last.

If you get a compressor warranty then it is a fair deal.

It is hard to find anything good now a days for less than 5K new.

I can't imagine replacing a burnt out compressor without cleaning and purging the system
