    Default Toto Toilet Flapper Operation

This hotel has Toto toilets and we are having trouble with the flush mechanism. When flushing the toilet, the flapper does not pull up unless you hold the flush handle down. As a result most guests now flush it two or three times before holding it down long enough. We have tried to lengthen and shorten the chain but can't make it work consistently. We are wondering if the flapper itself is too light since it pulls up but closes too quickly before the tank can flush. Any ideas???

Are you saying that it snaps back before a sufficient amount comes out to do a flush, or are you saying that the tank doesn't empty?

The tank is not suposed to empty. Only about a third of the tank is supposed to go through the flush valve when you push the handle. That should be about 1.2 gals, and should be enough to make it work.

Perhaps the flapper has been replaced? Or are these the flappers that came with the toilets?

What model Toto do you have? That's important as far as helping you. Just reply to this post with the model number in the tank. That should be enough for us to figure out the rest.

If you have replaced the flapper valves and they are not the right one for that particular toilet, they may not stay up the proper amount of time. This does not mean you must buy them from Toto, as most of them are made for them by Korky, and most places carry an exact replacement. You may have problems if you're using a generic flapper valve not made specifically for the particular Toto toilet you have. If it's the proper one, all it should take is one push all the way down and then release. Many people cannot believe it can flush that fast, but with the proper flapper and fill valve, they do work quite well.
