The ~button~ in a diverter valve

Is it good practice when the ~button~ / plunger in a diverter valve get's sticky - to remove it off the valve body and just add some sort of grease...

Mineral deposits may need to be cleaned off. Silicon based plumber's grease helps keep a CLEAN one working well longer. But, some of them end up being pitted, and then they don't work well unless replaced.
