Hello. I've received much help on this forum and hoping to again.

We are moving our laundry area and plan to have front loaders under a countertop. I'm starting fresh with the plumbing. What are my restrictions or best practices for having the drain and hookups behind the unit and under the countertops. Certainly a pain from a service point of view but I don't see how I can have the hookups above the countertops without it looking hackish.

Also, this laundry is in a seperate area of the home. Is it possible to have the venting on an AAV and if so does it have to penetrate into the attic or can it be buried in the wall? I'm assuming it has to be in the attic.

Finally, is there a need for hammer arresters with pex?

Thanks much!
Justin

If you must use an AAV, it must be in an accessible space where the flow of air is not inhibited, and so that it can be easily replaced when needed. If you intend to put it in the wall, putting a return air vent grille over it would suffice.

The shutoff valves for a washing machine should be turned off when the washer is not in use. If you plan on hiding them behind the machine under a countertop, you should install an electric shutoff valve so that the washer hoses are only pressurized when the washer is on.

Thanks! I'll run the AAV into the attic. I just had a metal roof put on and don't want to make any more penetrations.

After thinking on it there are couple ways to make it easier to access the supply shut-offs. One is to build some small cabinetry on top of the countertop that hide the laundry box as well as provide storage for supplies. The other is to make a nice cut to notch the back of the countertop (wood) and remove that piece whenever needed to access the laundry box right below.

I'm planning on putting the p-trap just above the bottom plate and the top of the drain line will be about 30" off the floor. Is this enough drop?

Thanks...

Got it. My wife and I discussed and she wants a slide out storage drawer thingy under the countertop so I'll just install the plumbing behind that so if quick access is needed it will just be pulled out.

Thanks!
