We deduced that the Switch Control was no longer working. We purchased a new one and installed it. On flicking the reset lever on the pressure switch, this caused the new Switch Control to blow up.

Any ideas why this would be? Do we need a new pressure switch and guage as well as a new switch control? Do we need a switch control with more hp? The old one and replacement one were .5HP - should we increase to .75HP?

Is it more likely to be that the pump is broken/jammed and that is why, when resetting, it is causing the switch control to blow?

Thanks in advance.

If it is a three-wire pump, the control box must be matched to the motor that is on the pump. If there is a dead short in the wiring or the motor, it is possible that the capacitor would swell and burst.

In a situation like this one would normally start testing by checking the resistance of the start/run circuits and checking for a short between legs or to ground.

Just to update - the pump guys came yesterday and it was a broken wire right at the pump connection. So pump was pulled - is in very good condition thankfully -wire replaced and water flowing nicely again! Thanks for all your help.
