the dough-nut approach...

I had considered trying to put one of those
rubber rings into that old hub and then trying to bang
in a peice of PVC or cast...with a sledje-hammer.......

I suppose you are right, it might have worked ok

I never have been impressed with those and
the inside of the hub was pretty nasty and uneven...

I really did not want to chance cracking or messing up
that tee in any way shape or form ...... at all....

then it would have been "the crying game"....
for the rest of that day and tomorrow too.......

I had not done this in a long time,
so I dug out the old stuff from the shop and went at it

sealing around the rope with the putty worked very well to
hold the lead into the joint ....

Pouring a Lead Joint

In hindsight I probably should have used a banded
no hub clamp , but I prefer the Ferncos as long as you support them properly
its all good....

I do these a few times a week, and just did one at home!Tight enough fit without being a pita. Fernco 22ux on the old ex. heavy cast iron in these parts. To be safe I silicone horizontal connections to be safe.BTW Mark,I use a 3/4 brush in my drill to clean out the inside so all goes smooth.
