Default Can I hydro ban a schluter presloped shower pan? And other stuff.

Hi. I'm working on a bathroom redo. (This is long, sorry.) I have it down to the studs and subfloor. I have a few technical questions. I'm doing it myself (capable female here) with the help of my brother and lots of reading. Even though I'm doing it myself, I want to make sure it is done correctly and won't leak. I have looked everywhere trying to find if I can use hydro ban on the schluter tray. I can't find anything in any of the forums. I know from all of my reading, most say "stick with one company product and go with it". I'm trying to find an alternate method for my shower floor so I don't have to build a mud bed. I have already bought some hydro ban. Here is what I would like to do, but will it work?:
My shower is on a corner of my house sitting over a basement crawl space. My subfloor is only 1/2 or 5/8 inch plywood. I was planning on putting another 1/2 inch on top of that. (Isn't minimum 3/4 inch?) Either cbu or wood.
I would like to use the schluter tray (thinset to wood floor), apply thinset on top to fill holes and level it, then apply 2 or 3 coats of hb on top of thinset, then tile. Will that work with those 2 different company's products? I know there wont be the 25 year warranty, but thats ok if it will work. I just don't want a leak. Thoughts? IF that works, then:

Drain. Will the flanged hb drain (my preference) work/fit on the schluter pan, or do I actually need the kerdi drain? I couldn't find that information anywhere either.
If I build the mud pan and put hb on top of that, will a foam curb work, or should I build that too with 2x4's?
With the mud pan, do I need to add anything to it besides the sand and cement? I've read about laticrete's 3701.

I am not planning on tiling the walls. I want to install cultured granite panels on top of the cbu walls. So I will have tile on floor, granite panels, accent tile above panel, then additional panel next to ceiling. I also want to put in a niche with the accent tile. Sequence? Do I tile the floor first, then set the panels on top of the floor? Or set the panel on top of the shower pan, then tile to the wall?

I'm going to build a bench as well. Do I have this right? Frame, 3/4" wood top, 1/2 inch cbu, hydro ban, whatever top I choose to put on it? Then the same on the front- My question here is sequence again. Do I cut cbu to length of subfloor, then put tray against the cbu, tape it, then hydro ban it, or only cut cbu to top of pan then tape and hydro ban?

I know laticrete has the shower pan as well with the drain built in, but it's $400. I'm trying to shave costs where I can. I actually called schluter to ask them, and the response was "I don't know".

Sorry for all the little stuff. I appreciate any help anyone would like to offer.
    Jen

Many Pros online do not trust Kerdi by itself an I have seen coutless examples or Red Guard, Hydro Ban and Aqua Defence used to reinforce the Kerdi Seams. In 12 years I have never once used Kerdi by itself without this extra protection.

I would bet that Laticrete gives you their blessing on this.

Why not got straight to the top. Ask Henry.

    Henry B Rothberg <HBRothberg@laticrete.com>

Henry is a great guy and will tell you straight or point you in the right direction.

    Good luck.

He's asking about using the Schluter tray, no Kerdi at all, and just HydroBan on it.

How does this differ from the Hydro Ban tray? have you seen the Hydro Ban ready made shower base? Looks like a white foam covered with Hydro ban?

I think Jen should be asking Henry. If anyone is going to approve this it would be him. After all it is his company! JW

    Default Silent Cheer for Laticrete!!!

Jen is getting a new Hydro Ban Shower system for her home. The folks at Laticrete have stepped up and decided to help out this family.

I heard back from Henry and he tells me it's as simple as that. Jen's husband is deployed overseas and her friend is helping her.

Reading between the lines I'm guessing they frowned upon the Hydro Ban over Kerdi system.

I'm blown away at the generousity of Laticrete (Well done guys!) and am going to take a special interest in this project as well.

Jen is humbled by this experience as I guess you can imagine. It's not everyday a complete stranger sends you products for your home. Jen did not know Henry was the owner of Laticrete when she emailed him - she just reached out looking for help.

    She got it. Big time!

    Yeah!!!!

    Question Response - Need Help!

Way to go John!! I am new to this Forum; and live in Dallas, TX. I am embarking on existing 46"x 31"x 68" shower conversion to steam room of 46"x 31" x 120" upto the ceiling, with 2 frame-less glass sides joining 2 tiled floors. I propose changing out the plastic shower pan with mud-built floor. All ceiling, floor, and walls will be tiled over hardi backer, with a cinder-block reinforced seat too.

I welcome recommendations on how to ensure vapor-proofing and water-proofing, while eliminating leaks and mold, etc in future.

Also I am considering a 9KW steamer from SteamSpa, Coast, SteamIt/Mr Steam, or Kohler.. Any recommendation or pros and cons of either manufacturers??? I am leaning towards the SteamSpa at $1800 for 9KW steam generator, including 2 digiital control pads, a multi-colored strobe light, steam head, and wrings. Other features include self cleaning, Built-in auto-drain, Proprietary dual-tank technology, Continuous Steam. QuickStart™ technology for hot steam output in under one minute; Steamhead
Led ambient light; Dual control panels; Filter to soften water before it goes into the steam generator. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS STEAM GENERATOR?? Thanks

I have installed many different steam generators in our renovations. The one from ThermaSol (Pro Series) is by far my favourite. Email my friend Mike and ask about his product line.

    Mike Straw <mike.straw@thermasol.com>

What I like most about this product is the Lifetime warranty and the fact that it self cleans the boiler steam chamber by itself and uses the steam outlet as a drain line. This can save you a few hundred dollars per year and basically pay itself off with yearly savings. Most steam generators can not do this.

I also like the heavy wet steam produced by the ThermaSol unit. Super well made units.

Before deciding on any system look into the different ways of building your steam shower. These three men all sell products that can do the job. Reach out to them and pick their brains.

    Dale Kempster (Schluter) <DKempster@schluter.com>

    Henry Rothberg (Laticrete) <HBRothberg@laticrete.com>

Eric Edelmayer e3 (Noble Company) <eric@noblecompany.com>

You might find this Ideabook of mine handy to help you pick a good tile(s) for your new project. Avoid any tiles adhere to sheets like the plague, unless they are paper or film faced. These types of sheet tiles are OK since the film or paper face is removed after the installation.

    An Email Conversation

    Mr. Rothberg,

Thank you for the email. Yes, my questions have been answered. Steve was very prompt at contacting me and clarifying the information. John Whipple also contacted me as well through the email you forwarded to him. John has graciously offered his help on my bathroom project. He has been a wonderful resource. I would like to thank you personally for that. It is much appreciated. Between Steve and John, I have no doubts this will be successful.
I have had the pleasure of communicating with Sean, Jay, Steve (and Danielle) from your company. They all have gone above and beyond in their willingness to reach out to me and offer help and answer questions in any way they can. I'm excited waiting for the products to arrive. Thank you so much. I am still in awe that your company is doing this for me family.
    With deepest gratitude,

    Jenna

    Subject: HydroBan shower system

Hello. John Whipple linked your email to a post I had on the Terry Love forum, to ask you a question about using Laticrete products. Since then, your company (Danielle and Sean Boyle) read one of my posts on another website and has contacted me regarding my bathroom renovation. My husband is currently deployed overseas, and as a thank you to him and my family, your company is very graciously supplying my bathroom products. I am overwhelmed by this generosity and extremely thankful for everything. While doing my research before even purchasing anything I realized that I wanted to use Laticrete from all of the positive reviews and comments I had read about. I have done hours upon hours of research and reading online to make sure this is done correctly and to code. I am doing all of the installation with the help of my brother. I had a couple of technical questions about proper installation of the products I plan on using.

My subfloor is only 1/2 inch plywood. I understand that I need at least 3/4 inch subfloor for the pre-sloped pan. I would like to add additional floor on top of what is currently there. Do I just add 1/4 to make it 3/4 inch, or 1/2 inch to make it stronger? I want what would be best, but don't want to over-do it either. Do you recommend wood or concrete board under the pan? Data sheet says both are acceptable.

Next question is about the vapor barrier. I am going to install cultured granite panel walls for the bottom 72 inches, then apply a 6 inch strip of accent mosaic glass tile, and then apply more cultured granite that go to the ceiling. The cultured walls are considered waterproof, so waterproofing the concrete substrate is not required. (I am going to apply HydroBan up about 5-6 inches on the concrete board adhered to the shower pan). In Ohio I was told that a vapor barrier is required. Since the HB Shower pan is a sealed system, where does the bottom of the vapor barrier go? I have considered putting HB on the walls also just to avoid the vapor barrier issue, and to also reinforce the waterproofing. They walls are adhered to the concrete board using 100% Silicone. I am going to use Latasil for this. Will the Latasil adhere to the HB? Suggestions or recommendations? Data sheet says to use ceramic tile for shower floor. I have 1 inch square porcelain tile that's only 1/8 inch thick picked out. (It is rated for wall and floor instillation.) Will that work on the shower floor, or should pick out some 2x2? I wasn't sure if the drain sits low enough for the tile I have chosen.
Thanks so much for any help you are able to provide,

    Jenna
