They may steal your Generator, but the gas may take awhile. A Shotgun with 00 works very well if you are home. (Warning Don't use steel shot around gas)
Put a quick disconnect , so when they take the gen the gas will be shut off automatically.
Or use a device like Jim mentioned.

And since environmentalists are trying to eliminate lead shot in the environment, why would you have anything other than steel shot in the gun?

I have the excessive flow "fuses" at the shutoffs to my gas appliances. Out of curiosity, I tested them during installation and they do close with wide-open flow. Haven't had one trip yet.
Has anyone had nuisance tripping with them?
Another thing you can add to prevent things going boom in the night is to add an automatic earthquake shutoff. Probably more likely here in CA than in DC, though.
