Default Using Wedi Board With Swanstone Shower Pan

When using Wedi Board with Swanstone Pan, does it get installed like the Swanstone instructions for their alcove walls?

They say the backer water proof walls should be flush with the Swantone shower pan lip and also with a 1/2 inch gap above the lip (to avoid wicking).

Seems like their approach would let water get into the 1/2 inch gap over time. But then, I have no experience with this wicking concern.

What do you folks think about this?

A 1/2" gap does not sound like a good idea.

Wedi has a sealant like Noble Company's Noble Sealant 150 and Schluter's Kerdi Fix. I would contact Bastian at Wedi and get one of his tech boys to give you a proper detail for this.

    You can reach Bastian here.

    Hi Dan,

Wedi board does not wick. Set it close to the lip on the receptor and caulk it with pure silicone.

John Bridge Wedi requires the use of their Wedi Sealant - not pure silicone.

P.S. I figured out the Vortex Fold. I never thought about "Static Electricity" as being the key step. Trickery at it's best.

I got an email from Bastain saying the question has been answered. Bastian cc'd me and I thought I would post part of the solution.

I have found over the past few years that getting proper answers is often more about how the question is asked and who you ask. Talking to a technical support staff member is usually the best approach.

Hopefully this helps more people out down the road.

Great and thanks. That was the attachment I was trying to send but I could not make it work.

John, also....below is the other info I got from Peter Beckmann, in addition to his attachment info that you just provided:

    Hi Dan,

    Thank you for your interested.

You want to cut out a notch on the back side of the wedi board, apply a continuous bead of wedi joint sealant to the inside of the tub flange and install the wedi board to the framework, so that the tub flange is integrated into the wedi board. wedi board can be installed down to the actual tub edge the tub edge leaving only 1/8” gap to alow for movement. Wedi board cannot wick water unlike fleece/paper laminated foam boards, gypsum or cement boards. It will fully back your tile all the way down to the edge of tub. Plumb, Square and tight corners are the result of the tub flanges safe integration into the wedi board. see the tub surround Kit TDS attached – It shows the installation method in detail
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you and have a great day
    Peter

Thanks for sharing Dan. For those people reading this thread there is a big difference between Silicone and Wedi Sealant (Re: Post #5 by John Bridge).

Careful what you read online and check with these product manufactures technical departments before following advice gained online.

If your having a hard time reaching them. Send me your question and I'll give it a go. I have come to know these men quite well over the past few years. I ask a lot of questions!
