    Default Pressure problem on jet pump

    Just getting finished installing water softener and iron filter. Was going to raise the pressure of the pump up to 60/40. Its a 50/30 now. Pressure in house after going through filters is not quite what it was.

    Anyways - pumps kicks on at 30psi runs until about 52psi and kicks off. Pressure immediately drops to 45psi and stays there. It was doing this before any filters were added. Pressure gauge is on top of pump and the line for the switch is off the front of pump. Am I getting a false reading since its mounted on the pump? It will hold the 45psi until you run the water and kicks back on at exactly 30psi every time.

    Its a goulds JRD10 jet pump, bladder tank (set at 28psi). Its mounted to the well casing.

    Any ideas?

    It sounds like the pressure tank is too far from the pressure switch.

    So the switch should be closer to bladder tank rather than on the pump?

    Yes. The only time it should be on the pump is when the pump is right next to the tank. How far away is the tank?

    The main line goes about 1.5' then the air tank is tee'd in. But the air tank has about 2' of 1" line before it tee's into the main line.

    And which Square D switch do I need (40/60). The normal switch or the one with low pressure cutoff? What is low pressure cutoff??

    The gauge reads jet pressure while the pump is running. Jet pressure is basically the backpressure on the pump. Do you have a regulator on the pump discharge? I'm not totally familiar with that model but I'm thinking you're simply reading the backpressure/jet pressure, which has to be a bit higher than the tank pressure to work right.

    Yes it looks like there is something on the pump discharge. I wonder why the previous plumber put the gauge and the switch on the discharge? It was short cycling - coming on at 30 psi and shutting off at 52, but in reality it was 45. Pump is in good condition - I manually held contacts open and it will easily build 65+psi.

    those distances from tank should not be an issue on a jet pump, probably have failing foot valve. Dont change the switch unless it worn out, just adjust it by tightening the larger rod nut and spring by tightening the nut on top. or if you want to get a new switch just get one i suppose. Low pressure cut off or LLC shuts off the pump if the pressure goes below 30 psi so that it does not burn out the pump. pressure going this low would either be loss of prime (low well level or suction leak) or water used beyond the capability of the pump. the can be a pain in an area where there is many power outages as you would have to reset the switch whenever pressure goes low. If you dont run out of water now its not worth it.
