Hello,

I have a Rheem 5 ton residential a/c condenser unit that sits outside the house.
This unit and all the similar ones in this neighborhood are approximately 20 years old.
This type of a/c condenser uses standard R-22 type freon.
This needs to be recharged after 25 - 28 months with R-22 freon.

Has anyone used these two types of products, Do they work, and what are the disadvantages.

1. A/C Leak Freeze® will stop leaks of refrigerant gas in HVACR air conditioning and refrigeration systems in homes and commercial buildings. A/C Leak Freeze® is inert until it mixes with the refrigerant. A/C Leak Freeze® is activated by refregerant escaping at the site of a leak — forming a chemical weld and sealing the leak.

2. A/C EasySeal: #4050-06
Treats 1.5 - 5 ton systems Nu-Calgon 4050-02 A/C Easy Seal Leak Sealant 2+1

Thanks for your time.

Yes they work, and may buy you another season. With R22 this year retail at around $30+ per pound, and going higher, and availbility next year in question.....you may seriously consider why you would spend much money on a 20 year old, probably 8 SEER system. You would probably cut your electric bill in half with a new 13~15 SEER system, not to mention that your 5 ton unit is probably over-sized. Your system probably takes 7 pounds of R22. You can not ever replace your indoor unit, as the SEER mismatch would be very difficult to set up.

That is correct, R22 is and will become harder to find in the near future. R22 has already been banned in some countries and the existing supply is dwindling. Besides, your system is 20 years old. If your furnace is good, just replace the split system with one of those R410a split systems.
