3" black steel gas line

Us it against the ipc code to use 3" threaded gas line, or does it have to be welded. This is outside residential, on a generator.

I have never had to weld it. But, if possible, I would convert the system to medium pressure so the pipe size would be MUCH smaller with a regulator at the generator.
