Just to clarify, per my very first schematic (in post #5), the only wires running in conduit are the power coming from the panel to the ceiling (red/white) and the red/blue from the ceiling to the switch. Everything else is 12/2.

If I understand correctly, it sounds like this is what you are saying: Run another cable in the conduit from the ceiling to the switch (not white, since it can’t be re-identified in conduit). This would essentially be the same as replacing the two wires in the conduit with a 12/3 and re-identifying the white. I’m not sure which one will be physically easier to do yet.

I know that I am assuming a lot here but I would bet that if another conductor was added to the existing conduit it would be stripped out of a cable.
It would be easier to eliminate the conduit and replace it with a three wire cable than do all that work trying to jury rig something and it would be a lot more compliant.

It is your house but if it were mine it would all get replaced.

It turns out it was relatively easy to run a new cable and just cap off what was in the conduit, so that's what I did. I knew I could figure out how to make it work, but I wanted to make sure it was right, and now I'm confident it is. Thanks to everyone for their input.
