Pitless adapter info

Our well has a MAASS 1" Model B pitless adapter that was installed in the mid 1970's on a 6" steel casing. The only information I've been able to find about it, is that it is a weld-on type. What are the chances that it is still in good condition after 35 or so years? Are there special tools needed to separate the male and female parts? Can a weld on adapter be replaced with a locking-nut style adapter? Thanks.

With a new o-ring it maybe better than any of the new stuff you could buy. I don’t think you can replace a weld-on with a thread-on. But you might be able to put it lower and plug the old hole.

That is good to hear. I'm contemplating replacing the 1" steel lateral pipe to the house with 1" poly before doing some landscaping work, but dread the thought of the outside threaded portion of the adapter being rotted and creating a much bigger headache. Do these older adapters tend to hold up better in this regard?

I just replaced my pump (35 years old) and it had a pitless adapter that needed to have the "back feet" released before I could pry out the fitting that went into the well casing. (should have taked a picture but I didn't). The O Ring and the rest of the pitless adapter was in really good shape with no pitting or corrosion. Just thougth I'd share that with you my assembly was still in good shape after that amount of time. I'd replace the steel lines. Mine are plastic with no issues.
