smelly mud

I had my bathroom remodeled about 3 years ago. This included cracked pipe in slab. I have recently noticed a smell coming from my linen closet which backs up to the bathroom. This closet has an access door to the tubs plumbing. When I opened the access door I found that there is not a slab under the tub. There is just the ground, wet mud. Is this the way it is suppose to be?

If you have mud in your access area, then you must have a leak somewhere.
