OK, so I listened to your wise voices and bought a new tub (acrylic, white, my kid loves it which is all that counts, I guess).
But it has a weird flange, NOT flat, 1/2" lip, then down to another 1/2" lip, then to tub.
SO I am wondering:
a) how to anchor it to the wall and
b) where the concrete board should go to above it (I will be tiling)
I'm going to try to post a (bad) photo here so you can see what I am talking about.
Thanks all for past and future advice.

We really need to do a play by play for the tub install demo. I have a couple posts online here somewhere showing my install method.
The plan of attack in multi layered depending on the type of tub you purchased.
Don't drill in through the edge with drywall screws.
Post the the link to the tub - lets look and see how the manufacture suggests it get install and then add or delete from there.

No instructions I could find, in box or on line. Dee Bath Products, imported by Can-Cell Industries, special order for Canadian Tire.
60" x 32" x 20.5". My friendly local plumbers have it plumbed in now but not attached to wall.
When you installed the tub did it go in with a ledger boarder or cleat under the long end? Is it rocking? Level?
Pinning a tub to the wall studs seams to make sense and many times you will see a roofing nail or drywall screw doing the job.
I can not find any of my window clips (not the proper term!) to show you how we do it. That and the series of pictures is a wall.
Basically your trying to put light pressure on the tub flange to the wall stud. This pressure should not prevent movement or expansion. Dicks lumber sells these little window clips which we use to reinforce this tub to wall anchor point. A couple wraps of electrical tape and a screw or two and you have a clip installed.
We have been using Green EBoard and not Hardi Board and we find that it back cuts better allowing us to care out a little material so the backer board does not swing out.
We have also been using lots of Kerdi Band. First we staple Kerdi Band onto the wall studs so that when the backer board is installed it lips around the flange and still over laps your tub. Then we pin it tight with the window clips. The a bead of Kerdi fix to pin the kerdi band to the tub deck.
This makes your weakest connection point rock solid. We prefer solid blocking around the tub for this step.
I do have a tub install that is active and will try and retake some more pics for you.

It seems you have a tub which none us us are familiar with, which would make me question it's quality. I would never put a tub in if I could not identify the maker, who would need to be well known in the trades. It's asking for trouble.
Candian Tire is a solid company here in BC Cacher. I doubt they are importing lemons. Now if it was an IKEA Tub I'd be worried. Or COSCO Tub. Or a Home Depot or Lowes Tub - that's another story.
The best place to buy a tub here in Vancouver is at Bartle & Gibson right in the North Shore. The counter guys are the best. Always hot fresh coffee (well before noon anyway) and the pricing is great. I have had nothing but problems with fixtures from box retailers. I have been told in the past the tubs sold through these outlets are often the factory seconds that don't make it to the real plumbing wholesalers.
When you look up models make sure the model your buying is not exclusive to the retailer!!! This is important.
If you by a Kohler Tub a model number with a 'HD' in the Sku would set of alarm bells here for me in North Vancouver.

Found instructions, seems the boys took them out of the box. Says to pin it to the wall with screws. Haven't yet but tub has some sort of support along long end and also adjustable legs, which we used to ensure it was level both ways. Will only attach along long side as my effing house is not quite square :-(
Attaching the tub with screws is a bad idea, but a very common way of doing things.
Following manufactures recommendations is sometimes key and often the process can be open for debate.
If you where to pre-drill a 5/16" hole in the upper tile flange and install a screw with a rubber washer and fender washer you would be following manufactures guidelines. If the screw is touching the sides of the pre-drilled hole you give the tub no expansion room.
Think about the tub expanding somewhat when it fills with hot water.
This is why we like the window clips and Kerdi Band. Lots of expansion and if the tub stresses this locking plate the tub flange is not drilled.
This technique of mine is quiter as many times thoose bathroom squeaks come from those screws drill into your tub.
I would advise you to waterproof your backer board up to 6' above finsihed floor. One Gallon of Aqua Defense would be enough.
If you plan on skipping this step (which you can, but I wouldn't) make sure you install a 6mil poly behind your backer board and have it lap over the tub deck or over your kerdi band flashing.
The number one reason for waterproofing failures is the same as the reason for tile failures - BOND BREAKERS. Keep the board clean. Wash in. Vac it before you apply any waterproofing products.
I would recommend you use Green EBoard for the backer board. It is available all over BC.
This is an example of a tub surround that has been waterproofed with Aqua Defense. The weakest point is the bottom board. You can clean and pre coat the bottom 4" of the Green Eboard before installation as well.
Are you building a soap or shampoo bottle niche into your design?
These are easy to do and simple to waterproof with a liquid waterproofing membrane.
Liquid waterproofing comes in all sorts of colours - Yellow, Black, Blue, Dark Green, Olive Green etc. They all work great if used properly.
And if you multiple young kids this is a fun idea! My girls love it.

There is just something wrong buying a tub at the tire company!!!!!!!! But of course , the drink "Blue" beer, also!
John it is hilarious that you hold Canadian Tire at higher regard than Home Depot.
My favorite part about CT is that everything says "made in China", on it.
I like cultured marble walls......you can skip all the special coatings. Its waterproof right off the truck.
A that differs from Home Depot how?
I do not buy much from the box retailers.
Me I like the boys at Bartle & Gibson in North Vanccouver or the high end bits and pieces from Cantu in Vancouver.
My point was that Canadian Tire is not some fly by night dollar store and has been around a long time here in BC. That's all.
