And if the piston is scratched and you can't see it and reuse it, you can ruin your new stack seals. That's why I said replace the piston and stack. But you may feel lucky.

Not having the control in backwash when he filled the tank with water with the by pass valve while a faucet was open trapped air in the tank and lifted the carbon up into the valve.

IMO he owes you at least for the new parts. And if I were you, I'd take the bill with me, including shipping and go after a check from him.

Success story...

I was able to get the Spacer Stack installed with no problem, inspected the piston and found no scratches, and checked for any remaining carbon bits. I have no water running out the rinse line at the wrong times now.

Thanks for the great info in helping me to do this. So much better than 'winging it'.
